News Month: December 2011

When Donuts started out half a decade ago it was the little party that could. It’s still around, isn’t so little and still can, which their 5 year year anniversary party at Public Works on December 30th will prove beyond doubt. As per usual with Pickpocket & co. the line up is varied, exciting and on the money. Gavin Russom, LA Vampires, Bobby Browser and Magic Touch all play on this one. It’s a New York City collides with Los Angeles kinda night.

Russom came up in the formidable DFA camp in the mid-noughties when the label was wreaking havoc with acts such as LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and Black Dice. He has released music on the label as Black Leotard Front, Black Meteoric Star and The Crystal Ark as well as working collaboratively with Delia Gonzalez. He has also built instruments for DFA camp members James … Read more ›

The legendary house and techno dj and producer will be gracing the new stage at Public Works on Thursday, January 19th, 2012. Public Works in and As You Like It will present Garnier in his Live Booth Sessions mode, in which he performs for over 4 hours (on decks and machines) alongside Benjamin Rippert on keyboards and Scan X on other machines.

It’s been a while since Garnier has graced the streets and dance floors of San Francisco. The last time was 2001, I believe, some months after the release of his Unreasonable Behaviour album (I still have the T-Shirt). This long-player contained unforgettable jams like “The Man With The Red Face” and “Last Tribute From The 20th Century.” Many moons before this he began his dj career in the heady ’80s and ’90s UK and European house and techno scene, starting out as a … Read more ›

While some of us are dreaming of log fires, snow, reindeer, Santa, shopping for presents, endless ‘to-do’ lists and having to deal with the in-laws and relations again, some are looking forward to a season filled with casual encounters. “Que?” I heard you softly intone. Well, this holiday season the club known as Public Works is having a pre-holiday partay in their Oddjob Loft called Casual Encounter. On the night of Friday, December 23rd, a group of people will get together at the Works and throw down some serious tunes into the wee hours. Some may be wearing Christmas sweaters, while others might well opt for a slinky, little off-the-shoulder number.

This group of people will be comprised of Primo of 2 Men Will Move You and Oldies famage,  Vivian and Alexis Penney from High Fantasy, X2SIH of Jock Jamz infamy, Monsieur M, who once upon a … Read more ›

On Dec 10th Public Works celebrates the holidays by throwing an eclectic shindig that’ll be fun for all the family. It’ll be another episode of the party known as ‘The Works’ — I know that I irreverently call the club itself The Works on this blog, but that’s because I’m edgy and real and so left-field that I’m not even in a field at all. But, lo and behold this party is called ‘The Works’ too. However, there is no need to be concerned, confused, convoluted or constipated, even, for this will be one helluva night out.

On the bill we have the following stupendousful talent; Gadi Mizrahi of Wolf + Lamb fame, LA’s finest, Pumpkin, SF’s bestest, Afrolicious, Calgary’s coolest, Smalltown DJs and the Inner Richmond’s latest and greatest, Briski. Also on the bill are the Stay Gold djs and the Public Works residents. … Read more ›
