Lights! Camera! Action!

It’s one of our favorite times of the year: San Francisco International Film Festival season! The Festival is celebrating its 59th year in operation, and Public Works is proud to be hosting the festival’s opening night party on Thursday, April 21.

The Festival opens with a blast from the past at the Castro Theatre, courtesy of director Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship, a period piece and vintage rom-com based on the Jane Austen novella Lady Susan. The film stars Kate Beckinsale (who is expected to attend the film alongside director Stillman) as a widowed social climber, fumbling her way throughout high society as she attempts to gain matrimonial advantage for herself and her daughter. It’s set to be a fun, playful trip back into history which will feel remarkably contemporary in its analysis of class and its humor.

Afterwards, head over to Public Works for the afterparty! Kicking off at 9 p.m., we’re offering a hosted bar, a slew of local restaurants offering up delicious bites and treats, and live entertainment courtesy of Makru a San Francisco-based live band that blends rumba flamenca, reggae, Cuban son, cumbia, and other global rhythms to create warm, positive vibes. Drinks, food, dancing, and mingling plus, who knows, maybe a couple stars will be in the audience? Come visit and find out!

Tickets for the film, the afterparty, or both (purchasing tickets to both nets you a discount) are available here courtesy of SFFS. And remember: the San Francisco Film Society is a non-profit organization which not only produces the San Francisco International Film Festival (the longest-running film festival in the Americas!) every year, but provides support to local filmmakers and producers (through the Filmmaker360 program) and provides year-round education and media literacy programs to over 10,000 local K-12 students. Your support and patronage ensures that the SFFS’s wonderful advocacy and preservation of cinema will remain a vital part of Bay Area culture.

Don’t wait too long we expect this to sell out. See you next week!
