Mix Master Mike Comes To Public Works!

On Thursday, July 30 at 9:00 p.m., we’re teaming up with the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival to host the official afterparty, featuring San Francisco native and DJ legend Mix Master Mike, for As I AM: The Life and Times of DJ AM, a new documentary about the life and tragic death of Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM.

Mike will be taking over the Public Works main room after an opening set by DJ Cyclofunk. Mike’s career kicked off way back in the early ’90s, when he, DJ Apollo, and Q-Bert began taking over the world, winning one DJ championship after another with their out-of-this-world scratching skills. In fact, in 1994 Mike and Q-bert were asked to stop competing — the competition simply couldn’t hang.

Shortly thereafter, DJs Apollo, D-Styles, and Shortkut joined up with Mike and Q-bert to form the Invisible Skratch Piklz, who singlehandedly revolutionized the art of turntablism — moving far beyond mere DJing, the Piklz used turntables to create a new kind of music, in which vinyl records became a new kind of instrument. The group were active for most of the ’90s, but disbanded in 2000, performing their last show here in San Francisco at the Skratchcon Conference.

After a stint in the late ’90s as the Beastie Boys’ resident DJ, Mike began diversifying his repertoire — he consulted on some video game soundtracks, released a number of albums and EPs, collaborated with Skullcandy headphones, and in 2011, he connected with Travis Barker, a musician and producer (and drummer for Blink 182) closely affiliated with the late DJ AM. Come join Mike and many others as they celebrate DJ AM’s life here on the dancefloor at Public Works.

Immediately preceding our party here at Public Works, catch the world premiere of As I AM screening at the Castro Theatre at 6:25 p.m., and see Mix Master Mike and many others discuss DJ AM’s life and legacy on the big screen.

Right afterward, we’ll see you on the dancefloor here at Public Works, celebrating AM’s life — and Mix Master Mike’s music — in person!
