Scratcha Joins Shake And Creep At Icee Hot!!!

That headline sounds like a description of being stuck in bed with the flu, but fear not brave PW blog readers that is not what it is about at all. It is about the British artist, Scratcha DVA, one of the most prolific UK dance music artists at the moment, who will be gracing an Icee Hot line-up on Sunday, May 29th that also features Anthony Shakir and Creep. Scratcha DVA, or just DVA, has been around for a  while, getting his start in the early 2000s in the grime scene with the likes of Wiley. In the last few years, however, he has been a mainstay of what is now known as UK funky. This style of music, if you want to be technical, is a fusion of straight-up American-style house and 2-step garage with other bits thrown in there too, although Roska, one of its main protagonists, states that “a name is just a name.

The adventurous spirit of this hard-to-pin genre infuses DVA’s work, and this can be heard in the music he releases on labels such as, Hyperdub, Keysound Recordings and his own DVA Music label. He has also remixed material for Ninja Tune, Big Dada, Night Slugs and Roska’s label, Roska Kicks and Snares. His “Grimey Breakfast” radio show on Rinse FM has been running since 2005 and it is here that he gets the chance to play anything that he feels is relevant to the music he produces and champions. So his listeners can hear UK funky, dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass and all the music styles that form this family of UK dance music.

His more soulful alter ego, Soule Power, a project that is in the same vein as Bugz In The Attic, was launched in 2010 and he has used this to remix some of his own work on Hyperdub and DVA. And on top of this he gets himself behind the decks all over the UK, and is now taking it out to the west coast of the United States to rock Icee Hot at the Works in San Frandisco. It’s the holiday weekend, you know you need a dance, need to dance. Come and dance with DVA, Shake, Creep and us.
